The Appenzeller originates from Switzerland, because of this they are well adapted to mountain life. They like to roost up high and are excellent climbers – so their run must be extra secure or have complete free range.
They are brilliant forgers and will often look after themselves, whilst laying well on little food. They are a slender chicken with a distinctive forward pointing crest.
